Tendre jeudi est une exposition qui emprunte son nom et son principe au roman éponyme de John Steinbeck. Dans Tendre jeudi comme dans Rue de la sardine (la première partie d’un même récit), l'intrigue repose sur l'effort collectif des habitants du village de Monterrey pour organiser une fête surprise à leur bienfaiteur, “Doc", personnage pivot, scientifique érudit et bienveillant mais pas toujours amène. Autour de cette fête (en réalité une double tentative ratée) Steinbeck décrit avec humour, finesse et humanité les liens d'amour et d'amitié qui animent cette petite communauté de voisins.

L'exposition Tendre jeudi transpose à une petite communauté d'artistes la trame narrative du roman. A l'occasion d’un anniversaire, une cinquantaine d'entre eux (amis, voisins d'ateliers, anciens camarades d'école d'art, professeurs…) se sont réunis pour organiser une exposition restée secrète jusqu'au jour de son vernissage, un jeudi. Tout principe thématique y a été abandonné au profit d’une simple règle d’accrochage, chacun des artistes prêtant une pièce à placer au mur, de sorte à créer deux constellations d'oeuvres se faisant face autour de deux dessins empruntés à son insu à Claudia Tennant, la jeune artiste qui fêtait ce jour là ses trente ans.

Tendre jeudi is an exhibition that borrows its name and its principle from John Steinbeck’s eponymous novel. In Sweet Thursday as in Cannery Row (the first part of the same story), the plot is based on the collective effort of the inhabitants of the village of Monterey to organize a surprise party for their benefactor, “Doc”, a pivotal character, both a benevolent scientist and a defiant personality. Through this party (actually a double failed attempt) Steinbeck describes with humor, delicacy and humanity the bonds of love and friendship that animate this small community of neighbors.

Tendre jeudi transposes the narrative thread of the novel to a small community of artists. For the occasion of a birthday party, about fifty of them (friends, studio neighbors, former art school classmates, teachers ...) gathered to organize an exhibition that remained secret until the day of the opening, a Thursday. All thematic principles were abandoned in favor of a simple hanging rule, each of the artists lending a piece to be placed on the wall, so as to create two constellations of works facing each other around two drawings borrowed without the knowledge of Claudia Tennant, the young artist who was celebrating her 30th birthday on that day.
